Time for another posting of the Insecure Writer's Support Group! Hosted as ever by Alex J. First, exciting news as the blog tour for Reckoning, the last installment in my Black & White trilogy, kicks off in less than two weeks, on its release date of 19th September. This is going to be a lot of fun!
Let's turn to this month's IWSG question: What genre would be the worst one for you to tackle and why?
My initial instinct for answering this was romance, but having thought about it, I definitely couldn't write a nonfiction book. Too much research involved and I would get bogged down with trying to keep my sources straight. Although I studied journalism, I've moved away from that style of writing and enjoy the freedom to invent whatever I like!

I picked romance. I agree that nonfiction would be hard too. Good luck on your book release and tour. I hope it goes well.
I'm a researching nerd, so I do like non-fic writing. I don't see myself every writing military stuff--but never say never.

Romance was first for me. Ironic that you were a journalist but don't like doing nonfiction now.
Interesting that most of the men responding on this blog...if not all... wouldn't want to write romance and that got me curious if any men do write romance. Yes there rare, but use a female a pseudonym. Now I'm curious to see how men write romance.
I enjoy nonfiction but it is a lot of research and putting it all together.
Ah yes, research. Even in my fiction, I need to research a place, a natural problem such as an avalanche or rip tide. I want to get the details right. But even if you create your own world, you need to keep the details logical for that fictional world.

Congrats on getting your blog tour together. I didn't even think about nonfiction. I actually attended some workshops about writing nonfiction and still couldn't see myself doing it.
Yep, Nick writing romance is harder than most writers think. I do want to write a non-fiction travel memoir one day and a book on flash fiction but I don't see myself fitting those in in this lifetime, LOL.
Even with writing fiction, I don't think you can fully escape a certain amount of research.. even for fantasy. But I totally get what you're saying. There's a wonderful freedom inventing stories.
I like the freedom of fiction, but I have found certain subjects in non-fiction can be interesting, too.

I think I'd be up for trying nonfiction if the topic fascinated me enough.

Congerats on the book release and tour! (Yes, I'm rather behind here; I was moving and traveling and... yeah, now I'm procrastinating :D). I know what you mean about non-fiction. I like doing the research, but don't think I want to deal with either the stylistic issues or the importance of getting everything right. I have that problem with historical fiction, too, though I love to read it.
