IWSG June 2019

It's time once again for the monthly posting of the Insecure Writer's Support Group. Hosted of course by Ninja Captain Alex J. Cavanaughthe purpose of the group is to provide a safe place where we can vent our fears and insecurities over writing without fear of judgement. This month's excellent co-hosts are Diane BurtonKim LajevardiSylvia NeySarah FosterJennifer Hawes and Madeline Mora-Summonte!

So this month's question is: Of all the genres you read and write, which is your favorite to write in and why?

This is a pretty easy one to answer for me - I'll simply refer you to my blog title, where I already nailed my colours to the mast! I love writing speculative fiction - inasmuch as it can be considered a genre - because it can encompass many other genres such as sci-fi, horror, dystopian, and more, even alternative history. I'm yet to write in all of them but it's great to have so many possibilities. With speculative writing, you can create entirely new worlds, populate them, decide the rules that govern them, break those rules and start again. The only limit is your imagination!

I like speculative fiction/fantasy for the same reason. You are so right about all the possibilities in these genres, and I love that you can mix genres with them.

Never thought about speculative fiction that way. It;s nice to have some latitude.

With all of those genres, the sky's the limit!

Speculative fiction is such a great umbrella for all those genres to gather under. :)

I like speculative fiction as well. Being able to create your own worlds, rules, cultures etc. is so exciting.

I love the idea that speculative fiction can incorporate other genres, as well. There's no limit to what you can come up with!

Spec fic is a genre -- and maybe the greatest genre out there because it encompasses so much! :-)

Speculative fiction is a neat genre.

So much IWSG news!

I actually hadn't heard of Speculative Fiction until I wrote a story that fell under that umbrella.

You're right about speculative fiction having a lot of variety. Good point.

Good seeing you again, Nick! I do enjoy writing in multiple areas as well, but I seem to be producing more fantasy, if anything. :)

Add elements from other genres and you pretty much have everything fiction in speculative fiction.

I always appreciate people who are creative enough to build new worlds. I stick to the world I know...I think I'd confuse myself otherwise!

Spec Fic is one of the genres I definitely enjoy!

I'm with you on speculative fiction. There's something about getting to push the boundaries of a world, magical system, historical outcome, or ...

Great post!

I knew before I read your answer. We think alike!

Speculative sounds great, so free. I've never tried that area of writing. Thanks for all your encouragement during IWSG!

I love speculative fiction for that reason, too!

Hmmm, gee I wonder why I follow a lot of spec fic writers...

It's nice to have wiggle room. Some people can't handle it. I admire spec fiction writers. Happy IWSG!

Great explanation of what speculative fiction encompasses. Keep on writing them.

My genre of choice is mystery but I have done speculative - but not up to your standard, Nick. My IWSG Anthology entry may be a tad 'speculative' if I go with my alternative story. [I hope 'fantasy' allows for AH in this instance.]

Yay for speculative fiction! I completely agree.

Speculative fiction is a great choice! All the fantastical stories that can result from this genre is one of the reasons why I love it, too.
