IWSG June 2016 - Moving Forward

The first day of summer and time for another group posting of the Insecure Writer's Support Group, the brainchild of Ninja Captain Alex J. Cavanaugh. The group represents a safe harbour for writers to share their doubts and insecurities. Today's co-hosts are Murees DupeAlexia ChamberlynnChemist Ken and Heather Gardner.

I'm going to make this a short post today. I know this is the venue to air our insecurities, but the last thing I want to do is have another moan about how I can't move forward with my work. I feel like I'm in some kind of time warp this year in terms of progress, but next month I hope to have some other kind of insecurity to bring you, so I'm going to spend June shaking things up and trying things I haven't done before, like writing out of order or maybe sketching some mind maps. What I need now is to make a step forward. I still might not be posting much, but I'm really looking forward to seeing how you're all doing and I'm hoping to soak up some inspiration and enjoy the fantastic weather Scotland is offering right now.

So that's it from me. Back with a progress report next month!

  1. Hi Nick - glad you're feeling positive about life ahead - you've had your challenges this year ... take care and yes soak up that sunshine, before it slips right back down here - gosh it's freezing and I so wish it'd warm up!!

Interesting to see what you come up with ... good luck with all things - cheers Hilary

  2. Good luck! It's never fun to feel stuck creatively, as I know far too well, so I hope shaking things up leads to lots of progress for you!

  10. One word, one sentence, in front of the other. Moving forward is all we can do because there is no going back. :)

  11. Hey, where you're at right now? I totally get it. It consumes your life and changes everything. Physically. Mentally. Emotionally. I'm just so sorry that you're facing the struggles you are...just because some idiot couldn't reign in his anger issues for a moment. Healing takes time. We have to be patient with ourselves, eh?

  12. It's hard to produce when stuck in a creative rut. Maybe some new things are in order.

  13. Good luck on moving forward. The weather here is fantastic too. I can't believe I'm sitting inside right now.

  14. Sometimes changing things up is exactly what you need to move forward with a project. Good luck!

  15. Maybe your muse needs a holiday too. Let him go exploring other interests and let your imagination flow. As a writer, you're never finished. You may set projects aside sometimes, but you're never finished. The brilliance of a resting project may return just as you've immersed yourself in expounding on the seasonal splendors of Scotland! You never know... ;-)

  16. I make giant story boards to get my ideas flowing in a consistent direction. Baby steps are how it starts. I usually start with a simple philosophical inquiry or an image. The first sentence creates an avalanche. You're in Scotland? Cool!

  21. Enjoy that weather!!! :)
And, I think your mind maps idea sounds fascinating - please let us know how it works out.
I loved that part about hoping to have a new insecurity next month . . . it made me laugh. I name my insecurity different things but mainly I think it still boils down to one big "fear of failure."
I hope that your writing, mind-mapping, and weather enjoyment goes awesome this month!

Well, that sounds nice. I'd like to be in Scotland. :(

You and I are in the same boat, but I agree with you. June should be for shaking things up!!

  35. Nick,
I'm pretty sure that the rule is we can be positive and uplifting even if we don't want to vent insecurities - and that is surely what you are doing here, keeping going despite a hard year. Thanks for sharing this and hope you get to enjoy some great weather!
